This class meets weekly in person at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York City. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted in Yiddish and English.

Who should take this course?
This course is appropriate for those who have completed Beginner II Yiddish or equivalent coursework.

What topics will this class cover?
The goals of the course are to practice conversation in Yiddish and expand students’ Yiddish vocabulary. Each class will consist of a group conversation oriented around a set of vocabulary and grammar points. Vocabulary topics will include descriptive adjectives, verbs, animals, plants, clothes, the home, professions, and restaurant words. Grammar points will include using conjunctions, comparative/superlative adjectives, relative clauses, modal verbs, using zol in subordinate clauses, and more. The culminating project of the course will be a short play written and performed in Yiddish. This course will cover roughly Lessons 15-21 from Uriel Weinreich’s College Yiddish.

Is knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet required?
Yes, knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet is required.

Course Materials:
Students are required to have access to the Comprehensive Yiddish-English Dictionary, either through the online version or a physical copy (Purchase). Optionally, students can purchase a copy of College Yiddish (Purchase).

The instructor will provide all course materials digitally throughout the class on Canvas, including excerpts from College Yiddish.

Andryusha Kuznetsov is a teacher, translator, and artist living in Brooklyn, New York. He received his BA in Russian, Yiddish, and French literatures from UC Berkeley and has previously taught Yiddish in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is a member of GLYK, a New York-based queer Yiddish theater collective.
