Answer key to College Yiddish YIVO is pleased to present an answer key to its world-famous textbook College Yiddish by the late Uriel Weinreich. The answers were prepared by Naomi Prawer-Kadar and the late Bina Weinreich; at an earlier stage, Sonia Pinkusowicz-Dratwa and Chava Lapin also participated in the work. The manuscript was typed by Shaindel Fogelman, edited by Gosia Zaremba and reviewed by Paul Glasser. Our thanks also to the students and teachers who pointed out the need for an answer key; we hope that it will prove useful both to teachers and their classes and to students learning Yiddish on their own. Instructions for the user: 1. The answer key was completed from the sixth revised edition, second printing of 2006, so a few answers will not match the corresponding questions in earlier editions. 2. We have generally given one answer per question, occasionally two; the user must bear in mind, however, that there are often other possible answers, especially in the translation exercises. So if his answer does not match the one in the answer key, it may still not be incorrect. Feel free to contact YIVO with questions of this type. 3. A word in parentheses ( ) is optional. 4. On either side of a slash /, we give two possible answers. It should be clear from the context which part of the sentence allows for variation and which does not. 5. Where an exercise only requires completing a sentence, we give only the word(s) necessary to complete the sentence; we give a whole sentence only where the exercise requires it, such as in the translation exercises. 6. If the user finds errors or has questions, please contact YIVO at pglasser@yivo.cjh.org. |
