This class meets weekly in person at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York City. All course details (Zoom link, syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Google Classroom. Students will be granted access to the class on Google Classroom after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted in Yiddish and English.

Who should take this course?
This course is appropriate for those who have completed Beginner III Yiddish, Beginner IV Yiddish, or equivalent coursework.

What topics will this class cover?
In this class, students will increase their conversational vocabulary and develop a higher level of proficiency in verb conjugation in the past, present, and future tenses. Students will continue to strengthen their competence in Yiddish conversation, reading and writing, as well as their familiarity with Yiddish culture and music. We will read passages in Zucker’s textbook as well as additional poems and songs. Videos and recordings will supplement the class discussions

Is knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet required?
Yes, knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet is required.

Nachum (Nokhem) Lerner was raised in a Yiddish-loving home in Miami Beach, Florida. He studied Yiddish language and literature at Bar Ilan University, the YIVO Summer Program (at Columbia University), and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he holds an MA in modern Jewish history and literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He has taught Yiddish at the Workers Circle, Makor, the 92nd Street Y, Yeshiva University and JTS, and has taught at the YIVO-Bard Summer Program since 2023.
