Instructor: Nina Warnke

This class will focus on speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Students in this class should have taken two semesters of Yiddish before, be comfortable with reading and writing the alef-beys and be able to have simple conversations. In regard to grammar, this course will build on students’ knowledge of nominative and accusative cases, the present tense, and some familiarity with the past tense. The class will begin with chapter 8A of Sheva Zucker's textbook, Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature and Culture Volume 1.

Course Materials:
This course will use the textbook Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Volume I by Sheva Zucker. If you do not yet own a copy (any edition is fine), purchase the textbook here.

Nina Warnke currently teaches online Yiddish language courses for Gratz College. She was born and raised in Germany, where she started to learn Yiddish before studying in the Oxford Summer Program and receiving her Ph.D. in Yiddish Studies from Columbia University. During that time she directed the YIVO zumer program for a few years. Since then Nina taught Yiddish language, literature and culture courses at Indiana University, the University of Texas at Austin and Vanderbilt University. She has researched and written extensively about the Yiddish theater and is also working as a translator of Yiddish and German texts.
