YIVO Presents: A Taste of Rome’s Historic Jewish Cuisine With Leah Koenig

(New York, NY) – The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is pleased to announce its upcoming program, A Taste of Rome’s Historic Jewish Cuisine with celebrated cookbook author Leah Koenig, taking place on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 1:00pm (ET). The event, featuring an online cooking demonstration highlighting one of Rome's most beloved Jewish dishes, concia, continues a series of food-related programs at YIVO including our immensely popular online class, A Seat at the Table: A Journey into Jewish Food.

Rome is home to one of Europe's oldest and most delicious Jewish cuisines. Shaped by centuries of hardship and tightly-bound community, “la cucina Ebraica Romana” (the Roman Jewish kitchen), is defined by its elegant approach to vegetables, saucy braised meats, love of small and briny fish, and masterclass level standard for frying foods in olive oil. Leah Koenig will be cooking concia, a bright and silky marinated zucchini dish. The recipe is available here so make sure you have the ingredients ahead of time and enjoy cooking along with Leah.

Over 1,200 people from 24 countries have already signed up to join the event.

In May 2020, YIVO launched A Seat at the Table: A Journey into Jewish Food, the fourth class in the Shine Online Educational Series. Sponsored by Edward Blank and Family, The Covenant Foundation, and The Shine Trust. A Seat at the Table has seen nearly 12,000 registrants from 61 countries around the world. The class is self-paced and may be taken at any time. Registration is free through August 31, 2021, so don’t miss out. YIVO has now hosted a series of food-related programs, which has revealed a hunger for a deeper understanding of the culture and history of Jewish food.

THE SPEAKER

Leah Koenig's writing and recipes have appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Food & Wine, Epicurious, Food52, and Tablet, among other publications. Leah is the author of six cookbooks including The Jewish Cookbook (Phaidon, 2019) and Modern Jewish Cooking (Chronicle Books). In addition to writing, Leah also leads cooking demonstrations and workshops in the US and around the world. She lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and two children.
