This class meets weekly in person at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York City. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted in Yiddish and English.

Who should take this course?
This course is appropriate for those who have completed Beginner III Yiddish or equivalent coursework.

What topics will this class cover?
This class is a continuation of the Fall 2024 Beginner IV Yiddish (In-person) class and is open to all students at the upper beginner level. Students will use the communicative method to work on interpersonal and presentational communication skills. There is no textbook and all course materials will be provided by the instructor. Students will practice sharing information about themselves, their preferences, their schedules, and their heroes and favorite characters; having conversations over text message; inquiring for more information about various online or newspaper listings in Yiddish; exchanging advice about what to wear; working together to do the steps of a task in the right order; and more.

Is knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet required?
Yes, knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet is required.

Andryusha Kuznetsov is a teacher, translator, and artist living in Brooklyn, New York. He received his BA in Russian, Yiddish, and French literatures from UC Berkeley and has previously taught Yiddish in the San Francisco Bay Area.
