This is a live, online course held on Zoom. Enrollment will be capped at about 25 students. All course details (Zoom link, syllabus, handouts, recordings of class sessions, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted in English, and any readings will be in English.

Instructor: Paula Teitelbaum

Students in this course will learn a diverse body of lullabies from different times and places, both folksongs and ones that were created by beloved poets. The texts will help us learn about life of Yiddish-speaking Jews, especially women. Students will have an opportunity to work on proper pronunciation and align the song texts with the rhythm of natural Yiddish speech.

Yiddish Level:
Students of all Yiddish levels are welcome to register for this course.

Course Materials:
Song texts in Yiddish, transliteration and English translation as well as audio will be made accessible digitally to students on Canvas.

Paula (Perl) Teitelbaum is a Yiddish teacher and singer. She has taught Yiddish songs as part of her Yiddish language classes as well as at themed workshops designed for professional and non-professional singers at various events and privately. Her singing has been featured on the recordings Vaserl, Zumerteg, Fli, Mayn Flishlang, Di Grine Katshke (which she co-produced with Lorin Sklamberg) and on the soundtrack of the documentary Image Before My Eyes. Yiddish songs have always been a part of her life as a child, a parent and recently as a grandparent.
