New York, NY - On Thursday July 7th, the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and the Institute for Israel & Jewish Studies at Columbia University are co-presenting a summer conference, Women, the City, and the Yiddish Theater. The conference will begin with a panel at 1:00pm at Columbia University (Butler Library, Room 523). At 7:00pm, David Mazower (BBC Journalist, author of Yiddish Theatre in London) will give the keynote (619 Kent Hall).

This conference brings together scholars, librarians, and archivists to present the latest scholarship on the under-researched topic of modern Yiddish theater and performance. Participants will assess the newest digital archival resources for research in the field and consider the experiences of women in particular. In addition to David Mazower, other panelists are Alyssa Quint (YIVO Vilna Collections Scholar, Conference Organizer), Nina Warnke (Vanderbilt University), Alisa Solomon (Columbia University), Joel Berkowitz (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), and Michael Steinlauf (Gratz College). Among the archival resources to be discussed are materials of the Museum of the City of New York, the New York Public Library, and the materials in YIVO's Esther-Rachel Kaminska Theater Museum Collection
